Compatibility
VGA2EGA supports several video modes for display and saving of GIF pictures.
In EGA mode, hardware compatibility is assumed; for this reason, both
screen writing and saving to a GIF file is significantly faster than all
other video modes (i.e., VGA 640x480x16 and exotic SuperEGA modes). Other
video modes require software BIOS compatibility.
When selecting [V]GA Standard or [N]on-Standard video modes, please ensure
that your video card supports 640x480x16 or HIGHER. If the screen mode
selected is less than 640x480x16 or BIOS incompatibility exists (w/c is
highly unlikely unless you have a really strange video card) then
unpredicable results will occur.
EGA Wonder 800 and ATI VGA VIP user will find their 800x560x16 mode to be a
bit peculiar. When displaying the converted picture on the screen, line
0 to 5 get jumbled for some strange reason (ATI says this is a pervasive
problem). However, the good news is that the picture is SAVED CORRECTLY
and will appear they way it should in 640x480x16.
Dual Floppy users will find the saving procedure quite slow since disk
access runs at a turtle's pace. On my Hard Disk (8 MHz XT), saving a
640x350x16 EGA pic to a GIF file takes a little over 2 minutes.
